What is a QR code, and how does this generator build one?

A QR code is a two-dimensional barcode that packs a URL, block of text, or contact details into a scannable grid — any phone camera reads it instantly, no app required on modern iOS or Android. This generator encodes whatever you type using standard QR error-correction, renders it as a PNG at your chosen size and colors, and — for the URL type — routes the code through a short tracking link so a logged-in account can see scan counts. To be precise: the destination of a printed code can't be changed afterward (this isn't an editable "dynamic" QR code) — but every code is trackable, custom-colored, and free to generate.

What can you make a QR code for?

QR codes are one of the fastest ways to bridge print and digital — a menu, business card, flyer, or product label can send someone straight to a website, Wi-Fi login, or contact card with a single scan. SaveIt's QR generator supports the formats people actually need, free of charge:

Website / URL

Point customers to your site, menu, portfolio, or landing page from any printed material.

Plain text

Share a message, Wi-Fi password, or short note that displays instantly when scanned.

Contact card

Let people scan to save your business contact details straight to their phone.

How to create a QR code

  1. 1. Choose a type — URL, plain text, or contact info.
  2. 2. Enter your content — paste the link or type the text you want encoded.
  3. 3. Pick colors and size — match your brand and choose a resolution that fits your print size.
  4. 4. Download the PNG — your QR code is ready to use immediately, no watermark.

Tips for QR codes that actually scan

  • Keep contrast high. A dark foreground on a light background scans far more reliably than close, low-contrast colors — if in doubt, stick with black on white.
  • Leave a quiet zone. Don't crop or place other design elements right up against the code's edges — scanners need a small margin of blank space around it to lock on.
  • Size it for the distance it'll be scanned from. A code on a business card can be small; one on a poster or storefront window needs to be several inches across so it's scannable from a normal walking distance.
  • Test before you print. Scan your generated code with two or three different phones before sending it to print — it costs nothing and catches sizing or contrast issues early.
  • Pair URL codes with a shortened link. Since the code already encodes a tracking URL, you get scan analytics automatically — no extra setup needed.

Free forever — what an account adds

Every option above — type, colors, size, download — is available with zero signup and no cap on how many codes you generate. A free SaveIt account adds one thing for URL-type codes: a per-scan log (timestamp, device, approximate location) visible from your dashboard. There's no separate paid tier for this tool today.

Frequently asked questions

Is this QR code generator free to use?+

Yes, generating and downloading a QR code is completely free with no watermark and no signup required.

Do the QR codes expire or stop working?+

No. QR codes generated for plain text or contact info are static and work forever. URL QR codes redirect through a tracking link that also never expires.

Can I customize the color and size of my QR code?+

Yes — pick any foreground and background color and choose a size from 256px up to 1024px before generating.

Can I track how many times my QR code was scanned?+

Yes, when generating a URL-type QR code while logged in, every scan is logged with a timestamp so you can see scan activity from your dashboard.

What file format do I get?+

Every QR code is generated and downloadable as a high-resolution PNG image, ready to print or embed.

Is this a dynamic QR code — can I change the destination later?+

No — once generated, the encoded content is fixed. If you need to change where a printed code sends people, generate a new code. What SaveIt does support is scan tracking on top of a fixed destination.

Is the resolution good enough for printing?+

Yes — sizes up to 1024×1024px are supported, which is sharp enough for business cards, flyers, posters, and most print materials at typical viewing distances.
