What is a public IP address, and how does this lookup work?
Every device on the internet is reachable through a public IP address — the one your router or ISP assigns for traffic leaving your network. When you open this page, the server reads that address directly from the request, cross-references it against a geolocation database to estimate country, region, and timezone, and performs a reverse DNS lookup to see if a hostname is registered for it. The same process runs when you look up any other IP you type in.

Common reasons to look up an IP
- Confirming a VPN or proxy is working — check that your IP and apparent location changed after connecting.

How to read your results
- Location is approximate, not exact. IP geolocation is based on which network block an address belongs to — treat the city as a rough estimate, the country as generally reliable.
- A missing hostname is normal. Most home internet connections don't have a reverse DNS entry at all — only servers, businesses, and some ISPs typically register one.
- Mobile networks often show a distant city. Mobile carriers frequently route traffic through regional gateways, so your apparent location can be an hour or more from where you actually are.
- Your IP changes more often than you'd think. Most home connections use a dynamic IP that your ISP can reassign — if you look up your IP again tomorrow, don't be surprised if it's different.

Why is my IP address showing a different city than where I live?+
IP-based geolocation is approximate — it's based on which ISP or network block your address belongs to, not GPS. It's often accurate to country and region level, but the city shown can be off, especially on mobile networks, VPNs, or corporate connections.
Does this tool show my ISP name?+
No — we intentionally don't claim ISP/provider detection, since it requires a commercial database we don't use. What you get is honest: country, approximate region/city, timezone, coordinates, and reverse DNS hostname.
What's a reverse DNS hostname, and why does it matter?+
It's the domain name (if any) registered to point back to that IP address — for example, 8.8.8.8 resolves to dns.google. It's useful for identifying hosting providers, VPNs, or corporate networks, though many residential IPs have no reverse DNS entry at all.
Can I look up someone else's IP address?+
